Driving in Ireland is an adventure all in itself. Around every corner could be a beautiful sight…or a large truck that takes up more than his half of the already dinky road. Today we headed out to visit a few places that had been recommended to us by http://www.irelandwithkids.com (Jody is an absolute wealth of information)
The main course for dinner…lamb chops…came from an amazing butcher shop in Newport. The owner, Sean Kelly, was a friendly man who took time with us as we picked out different items to try. Black pudding anyone? Next door his daughter has a bake shop with some of the best cakes that I have ever tasted. I tried to get her recipes but no luck. I will not give up so easily though!!
A stop at the grocery yielded some food for dinner along with a rather fun collection of Irish “biscuits”.
We checked out the Museum of Country Life in Turlough. A beautiful museum with lots of displays about life in rural Ireland in the mid-1850’s to the mid-1950’s. Unbelievable how difficult life was. The manor house was impressive in stature but what really caught the boys’ attention was the fact that one of the former owners liked to duel and survived 46 duals only to be tried and hung for dueling.
Kylemore Abbey is picture perfect. We got these pictures from the road. The kids were too tired to take a tour. I didn’t mind saving a little money since we got a beautiful view anyway.
